DOVER, Del. — Jimmie Johnson had it all. He won the pole, dominated again to win at Dover International Speedway, and even held his baby daughter in his arms in Victory Lane for the first time.
Austin Dillon could not have found a better way to send good vibes to his grandfather.
Austin Dillon started today by setting an NASCAR Camping World Truck Series rookie record by earning his fifth pole of the year and ended the night by winning the Smith’s 350k at Las Vegas Motor Speedway before an estimated crowd of 40,000.
Coming into Dover this week as the second race in NASCAR’s Chase for the Championship, the story lines all centered on last week’s winner Clint Bowyer, and his team, being fined and having 150 points deducted for their car not making postrace specifications. Everyone had differing opinions on the matter, but most agreed that the penalty was harsh. The 150 points lost immediately dropped Bowyer from a contender to last in the Chase.
Brian Ickler has been racing in NASCAR for less than two years but could help make history in the next two months.
The 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase for the Championship begins this week on the 1.058-mile track of New Hampshire. Only 60 points separates the top from the bottom as the 12 drivers start a 10 race campaign with the champion being crowned November 21 at Homestead-Miami.
