Five people died in Texas as a storm system brought tornadoes and flooding to the state on Saturday, increasing the death toll from harsh weather in the southern United States this week to 23, according to officials and local media.

Torrential rains have killed at least 10 people in Texas and Oklahoma, including three in Houston where floods turned streets into rivers and led to about 1,000 calls for help in the fourth-most populous U.S. city, officials said on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service describes the storm as a “crippling and potentially historic blizzard” that could bring up to 3 feet of snow, heavy winds, widespread power outages and epic travel difficulties.
