The spring sports season was limited to six weeks, with some teams’ seasons even shorter because of COVID, but players and coaches were just happy to get back on the field.
Baseball
Tai Nguyen doubled home Tyler Whitaker and Tommy Rose with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Bishop Gorman past Desert Oasis 5-4.
Desert Oasis, the last Nevada team to win a state title at the highest level of baseball, won two elimination games Thursday in the Class 5A Southern Region tournament.
The Desert Oasis boys posted 195 points and the Palo Verde girls had 163 to win the team titles at the Class 4A Desert Region track and field meet Wednesday at Desert Oasis High.
Ninth-seeded Desert Oasis scored two runs in the seventh inning to defeat No. 1 seed Green Valley on Tuesday in the Class 5A Southern Region softball tournament.
Third-seeded Centennial rallied for five runs in the second inning to defeat No. 14 Las Vegas on Monday to open the Class 5A Southern Region baseball tournament.
Bishop Gorman is the No. 1 seed and favorite in the Class 5A South Region tournament, but Palo Verde leads a group of other teams talented enough to make a run.
Wednesday’s game between Basic and Green Valley was ruled a double forfeit after a postgame brawl, and both teams will forfeit their first regional tournament game.
