Shadow Ridge beat Palo Verde 3-2 in the early game at Bishop Gorman on Saturday, then took a 10-8 decision in the second game to win the Sunset Region softball team and clinch a spot in next week’s state tournament.
Both the boys and girls teams dominated for Palo Verde as they cruised to region titles.
Farries Gardner, a 6-foot-2-inch opposite hitter, had 17 kills — including three emphatic ones to end the game — and 10 digs to propel Centennial to a decisive 25-18, 25-15, 25-21 victory over defending Class 4Astate champion Palo Verde at host-site Arbor View.
Makall Whetten knocked a two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Panthers a 5-3 lead over Shadow Ridge. The Mustangs left the bases loaded in the seventh without scoring, and Palo Verde advanced to its ninth straight Sunset Region final.
