UNLV said in a news release that it expected to save $1.2 million by taking such a step. The action was taken because of the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis.

Acting university president Marta Meana is still in the process of conversing with key stakeholders regarding the school’s mascot, Hey Reb!, per school spokesperson Tony Allen.
The school is finalizing a comprehensive plan that it hopes to unveil in the coming weeks that would allow its athletes to return for voluntary workouts.
