Green Valley sophomore Steele Dias won the 106-pound state championship to help the Gators to their sixth consecutive state title Saturday at Spanish Springs High School.

Having won five consecutive state championships, Green Valley coach Jon Ferry might have expected to feel comfortable with a lead after the first day of the Class 4A state tournament. But Ferry wasn’t feeling so secure as his team prepared to leave the gym after Friday’s semifinal round at Spanish Springs.
The Gators had someone competing for the championship in all but one weight class, comfortably rolling to their seventh consecutive team championship Saturday at Las Vegas High with a score of 324½ points.
Tim Conaway’s first competitive action after breaking his thumb was Friday in the Class 4A Sunrise Region tournament at Las Vegas High, winning twice and earning a berth in the 120-pound semifinals.
