On June 2, the Illinois Senate passed a bill that expands its gaming industry, in part allowing up to six new casinos. Local experts say once the bill is signed by Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, it’s sure to open new opportunities for gaming companies, including some based in Las Vegas. But with a tax structure that demands far more than Nevada’s, some companies may pass on the chance to move to the Windy City. In 2018, the effective tax rate for the 10 casinos in Illinois was 33.8 percent, including state and local wagering and admission taxes. The new Chicago casino is expected to have a 66 percent effective tax rate. By comparison, Nevada’s tax on gross gaming revenue is between 3.5 percent and 6.75 percent. Analyst Barry Jonas

Friday, Sept. 21 is National POW/MIA Day. The day of remembrance honors those who are missing in action and prisoners of war. A woman was hospitalized with serious injuries on Thursday morning after being shot inside a North Las Vegas house. Police responded about 11 p.m. to a shooting at a home on the 5600 block of Tropic Breeze Street, near Ann Road and Bruce Street.
The wounded woman, police believe, was shot by a man, who later barricaded himself inside the house. SWAT was called to assist, and when officers entered the house, they discovered the man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The standard bottle size for liquid nicotine has grown from 15 milliliters to 120 milliliters, while decreased production costs have driven e-cigarette prices down. The Lights FC had a difficult time preparing for Seattle Sounders FC 2. The Lights faced a three-day turnaround between games. So the team did little on-field work before its match last Saturday.
