Regent Cathy McAdoo held a dinner at her son’s Elko restaurant … and had the higher ed department pay for it. Then the Regents catered a meeting at the same restaurant for $10,000. Regent John T. Moran frequents top Vegas restaurants … sometimes with campaign donors. And Regent Kevin Page goes to dinner with his brother and others. The Regents and agency say the spending is appropriate but … a good government advocate questioned the expenses. Robert Fellner, policy director Nevada Policy Research Institute.

Centennial junior Jade Thomas is the third of four children in her family to commit play basketball at a Division I university. Thomas, in October, announced her commitment to UNLV, where she’ll join her sister, Bailey. Her other sister, Sam, plays for Arizona. The trio learned basketball from their father, Derek, who coached at the college level for 25 years and now coaches locally. Jade made the game-tying 3-pointer as time expired in the Class 4A state championship last year. She’s a versatile, 5-foot-10 inch guard who excels in various roles for the Bulldogs.

Company that creates vibrator-like device claims genders bias against CES

Lora DiCarlo is a women-run start-up that creates a vibrator-like device designed for female pleasure called the Osé. This year they were awarded the CES Innovation Award in the Robotics and Drone Category, but a month later the Consumer Technology Association, which runs CES, rescinded the award and their booth. Haddock and her team believe it is a reflection of gender bias and sexism in an industry with a long history of male domination.

Las Vegas has a long history of developers pitching massive projects and never building them. Ideas that have come and gone include megaresorts, stadiums and condo towers. Current stalled ideas include a 27-acre arena and hotel project on the Strip and a 130-acre extreme sports park near Town Square. More than $3.5 billion worth of relatively new projects in Las Vegas are stuck on the drawing board or showing little progress.

Las Vegas apartment rents are climbing at one of the fastest rates in the country. The average asking rent is $1,055, up 25 percent since early 2013, according to Reis Inc. Apartment complexes are also selling fast, and at rising prices. Buyers often plan to renovate the property and boost the rents.
