Nevada Supreme Court denies Halverson request to return to bench

Former Clark County District Judge Elizabeth Halverson’s long shot bid to return to the bench was officially denied Monday when the Nevada Supreme Court affirmed a 2008 decision by the Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline that permanently removed her from the bench.

Climber survives 1,000 foot fall

LONDON — A climber who survived a plunge of 1,000 feet from one of Britain’s highest mountains still plans to scale Everest this year. Adam Potter, 36, of Glasgow, slipped on an icy patch off the summit of the 3,589 foot Sgurr Choinnich Mor in Scotland on Saturday.

5-time Oscar-winner composer John Barry dies at 77

LONDON — Five-time Oscar-winning composer John Barry, who wrote music for a dozen James Bond films, including “You Only Live Twice” and “Goldfinger”, has died. He was 77. Barry died in New York on Sunday, his family said. He won two Oscars for “Born Free” in 1966, for best score and best song. He also earned statuettes for the scores to “The Lion in Winter” (1968), “Out of Africa” (1985) and “Dances with Wolves” (1990).

Cairo airport a scene of chaos as foreigners flee

CAIRO — Cairo’s international airport was a scene of chaos and confusion Monday as thousands of foreigners sought to flee the unrest in Egypt and countries around the world scrambled to send in planes to fly their citizens out. Nerves frayed, shouting matches erupted and some passengers even had a fistfight as thousands crammed into Cairo airport’s new Terminal 3 seeking a flight home. The airport’s departures board stopped announcing flight times, fueling passengers’ anger.
