A math teacher at West Career and Technical Academy in Las Vegas has been arrested on child sex charges. Renee Rine, 36, was booked Friday into the Clark County Detention Center. She is being held without bail. She also faces charges of first-degree attempted kidnapping and contact with a minor or mentally-ill person. Rine is the ninth school district employee arrested during the current school year.
Las Vegas police are investigating a deadly shooting Monday morning in central Las Vegas. A man was found dead after 3 a.m. outside the Rancho Discount Mall at 2901 W. Washington Ave. The man had been shot once. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have blocked off the parking lot in front of the store while detectives investigate. At 5 a.m., the man’s body was still on scene, laying on the walkway near a shopping cart and a pile of blankets.

Bryan Clay was sentenced to life in prison without parole in December for the rape and murder of a mother and her 10-year-old daughter. On Thursday, he was in court again to be sentenced for other charges, including robbery, kidnapping and sexual assault of a minor under 14 . A mysterious software firm is buying more than 67,000 acres of land in Northern Nevada with plans to showcase its technology there. Blockchains LLC — whose website does not list any executives, a phone number or clear explanations of what its software does — is acquiring the land at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center. It buying a landmass triple the size of Summerlin, Las Vegas’ largest master-planned community. The seller, developer Lance Gilman, says a major announcement from the company is expected by the end of February.

Shortly before 6 a.m., a man was approached by two men in the parking lot of a Best Buy at 6950 Arroyo Crossing, near the 215 Beltway and South Rainbow Boulevard. Police said at least one of the two suspects was armed with a handgun. The suspects forced the man into his car and made him drive to an ATM, where he withdrew an unknown amount of money for the suspects, Metropolitan Police Department Lt. David Gordon said. The two men then instructed the victim to drive to a convenience store at 4030 W. Charleston Blvd., where they told him to get out of his vehicle. Police said the suspects fled north on Hinson Street in the man’s car.

Las Vegas City Councilman Ricki Barlow will plead guilty to felony fraud charges for using campaign funds for his personal use in 2015, and resigned his seat representing the city’s Ward 5 on Monday.
Barlow is “deeply ashamed” of his conduct, he said at a Monday afternoon news conference at City Hall.

A team of wildlife biologists from several agencies, including the National Park Service, fanned out in boats for their annual survey of the national bird. A ‘Personality conflict’ is shaking up North Las Vegas City Hall. City Manager Qiong Liu is negotiating her resignation. It comes one day after she insisted on firing Assistant City Manager Ryann Juden amid long-simmering tensions. Mayor John Lee insisted Juden will not be fired. The dispute reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over how to fund infrastructure projects at the Apex Industrial Park. Liu said appointing Juden was “the biggest mistake that I have made over the past 4-plus years leading the executive team.”
A three-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 95 will be narrowed to a single lane for seven months starting Thursday. Crews will be building freeway bridges in northwest Las Vegas.
Both directions of the highway will be reduced to one lane between Skye Canyon Park and Paiute drives from 5 a.m. Thursday to July 12.
Crews are building a new interchange bridge at Kyle Canyon Road as part of a larger $65 million upgrade of U.S. 95 in the northwest valley.
Almost half an inch of rain fell over the Las Vegas Valley overnight, according to the National Weather Service. The valley’s record-breaking 116-day dry streak ended Monday, with 0.14 inches of rain before midnight. The valley saw another 0.35 inches of rain between midnight and 6 a.m. Tuesday, the weather service said.
A firefighter was injured and was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening when a fire broke out at a strip mall in the southwest Las Vegas Valley Monday night.
The fire was first reported at 10:52 p.m. on the 3400 block of Jones Boulevard, near Desert Inn Road, and as of 1:30 a.m. Tuesday firefighters and police were still at the scene. At least seven businesses were damaged, including a furniture store at the north end of the mall. The strip mall also houses several restaurants, including Fuku Burger, which was on the opposite end from where the fire broke out.
Elevators at Mandalay Bay are again stopping at the 32nd floor after a pause at the end of last year.
Mandalay Bay closed off a few floors starting in late November amid a guest slowdown caused by the combination of the holiday season and fallout from the Oct. 1 mass shooting.
