Suspect shot after Bellagio robbery dies

Updated March 16, 2019 - 10:25 pm

A man who was shot after an armed robbery at the Bellagio on Friday night has died.

He was shot by a Las Vegas police officer about 9:45 p.m. after police said he approached a poker cage area and demanded money. He fled through the north doors and tried to steal a vehicle from someone at the valet area.

As he ran, he fired at least one shot at officers, striking one. A second officer returned fire and struck the man. He was hospitalized in critical condition but later died, said Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Aden OcampoGomez.

The officer who was shot survived and was treated and released from University Medical Center early Saturday.

“The officer had his bulletproof vest on, which probably saved his life,” Metro Capt. Nichole Splinter said early Saturday.

Splinter said detectives interviewed many witnesses after the shooting.

“It was a packed casino on a Friday night,” she said.

This is the fourth shooting involving Metro officers this year, according to Review-Journal records.

The names of the officers involved will be released after 48 hours, according to department policy.

More information will be released in a press conference 72 hours after the shooting.
