Riot at Yerington juvenile facility injures 2 employees, causes fire damage

A Nevada high school for troubled boys had its fourth riot on Saturday in only four months.

About 10 p.m. on Saturday, Mason Valley Fire Protection responded to a riot at the Silver State Academy’s Rite of Passage facility in Yerington. At least 10 students from the school were involved in the riot and two school employees were injured.

The riot left two buildings, a school maintenance building and laundry storage area, with significant fire damage, said Mason Valley Fire Chief Scott Draper.

Ten students left the property, according to a statement from the school, and were later returned to the facility in Lyon County by law enforcement.

In December, the facility had three separate riots in a two-day period, according to the fire department, but this was the first involving a fire.

Saturday’s riot is promoting the school to take action.

Ten students have already been forced out of the program, according to school representatives, and further expulsions are pending.

“We are disappointed with the actions of a few of our students and those responsible will be held accountable,” the school’s statement read.
