BASEBALL: Wolfram pitches out of trouble, helps Panthers nip Skyhawks

Paul Wolfram got a strikeout to strand the tying run at third base in the bottom of the seventh inning and give Palo Verde’s baseball team an 8-7 road win over Silverado on Monday.

The Skyhawks trailed 8-4 with no outs in the seventh before Vincent Taormina’s three-run homer pulled Silverado within a run.

Dillon Johnson then singled, and a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch moved him to third. But Wolfram got a pop up and a strikeout to end the game.

Dan Heller was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Palo Verde. Brad Lewis was 2-for-4 with a triple for the Panthers.

Taormina finished 3-for-4 with six RBIs.

Desert Pines 7, Western 4 — At Western, Iquan Corsey went 3-for-3 with two triples, three runs and two stolen bases to lead the Jaguars over the Warriors.

Jose Avelino threw 2 1/3 hitless innings of relief, striking out five with no walks, to get the win.

Ryan Naki-Poomaihealani added two hits, including a double, for Desert Pines.

Osvaldo Escobar doubled twice for Western.

Shadow Ridge 24, Eldorado 0 — At Shadow Ridge, Travis Caskie and Chris Opolka combined on a no-hitter as the Mustangs routed the Sundevils in five innings.

Caskie went four innings with six strikeouts and one walk. Opolka struck out the side in the fifth.

Opolka went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, and Jordan Hand hit a three-run home run for the Mustangs, who had 23 hits and nine players with two hits.

Chris Mendoza, John Maxfield and Trevin Reynolds each added two hits and two RBIs. Brady Hoskins doubled twice, and Jordan Johnson, Eric Jordan, Dustin McDonald and Jake Wilson each had two hits for Shadow Ridge.

Clark 6, Sunrise Mountain 4 — At Clark, Jacob Gainley went 2-for-3 with an RBI and tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to get a save and help the Chargers hold off the Miners.

Miguel Carrillo was 2-for-3, and winning pitcher Ryan Ebel went 1-for-2 with a double for Clark.

Liberty 9, Bonanza 4 — At Bonanza, Dan Skelly went 3-for-5 with two triples and two RBIs to lead the Patriots over the Bengals.

Jesse Keiser was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs, and Justin Lutes went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Liberty.

Keith Werner drove in two runs for Bonana, which led 4-1 after one inning.

Centennial 13, Mazama (Ore.) 5 — At Centennial, the Bulldogs blew the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat the Vikings.

Jared Drizin was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs to lead Cenennial. Travis Stevens went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Cooper Powell was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs for the Bulldogs.

Brandon Pron was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for Mazama.

Basic 11, Las Vegas 2 — At Las Vegas, winning pitcher Mikey York went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base to help the Wolves top the Wildcats.

York went five innings, allowing no earned runs on seven hits, to get the win. He struck out four and walked one.

Cory Wills was 2-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI, and Skyler Mahoney and Josh McLean each went 2-for-4 with a run. McLean added two RBIs.

Jose Sanchez and Jamie Solis each had two hits and an RBI for Las Vegas.

Rancho 13, Cheyenne Mountain (Colo.) 3 — At Rancho, Richie Coughlin scattered five hits over five innings and struck out eight as the Rams downed the Indians.

Dylan Pletsch went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs to pace the Rams. Kavion Kealoha was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Bryce Harrell also doubled for the Rancho.

Legacy 14, Canyon Springs 5 — At Canyon Springs, Aaron Trifunac tripled and drove in two runs as the Longhorns rallied with six runs in the sixth inning to down the Pioneers.

Donta Williams also tripled for the Patriots, and Quentin Ewing and Austin Michals each drove in two runs.

Michals also picked up the win, striking out four and giving up three earned runs over five innings.

Isiah Carter led the Pioneers with two RBIs, and Erick Espinosa also drove in a run.
