Silverado boys hold off Basic for play-in game victory

Alex Paula and David Ware each scored 15 points to lead Silverado’s boys basketball team to a 61-57 victory over Basic in a play-in game at Coronado on Monday to claim the final berth in the Sunrise Region playoffs.

Ware also had seven rebounds and three steals. Justin Johnson added 10 points for Silverado (12-15), including a pair of free throws with one second to play to put the game out of reach.

The Skyhawks play at Canyon Springs (24-2) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in a Sunrise quarterfinal.

Vince Carducci led Basic (12-14) with 14 points, including three fourth-quarter 3-pointers to help the Wolves keep it close.

Carducci’s 3-pointer with 5:37 to go cut the lead to 43-42, but the Skyhawks answered with a 9-0 run to regain control.

Kyle Taitano hit a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left to cut Silverado’s lead to 59-55.

After the Skyhawks missed two free throws, DeVonte Boyd drove for a layup with six seconds to go to cut the lead to two.

Johnson was then fouled and knocked down the ensuing free throws to seal the victory.

Taitano added 12 points, and Boyd had 10 points, six rebounds and seven assists for Basic.
