UNLV sports fans buy gear, apparel at rare sale

It happens only once every two years at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas — the Athletic Department’s sports gear and apparel sale.

The tables and racks of authentic UNLV football jerseys, baseball tops and T-shirts were a buffet Saturday for sports buffs who paid $25 for each pair of new sneakers or sports team jersey.

Other items were much less expensive, running from a buck to $10 for everything from batting gloves to T-shirts. The money raised from the sales benefits UNLV athletics.

The sale was only the fourth of its type in the university’s history, as athletic department officials like to build up both the demand and the inventory of surplus gear and jerseys.

From 8 a.m. to noon, several hundred UNLV sports fans checked out the merchandise in the North Gym at the Paul McDermott Physical Education complex. It served as a lead-in to the UNLV spring football game at noon and the UNLV baseball game at 2 p.m.

The crowd checking out the sports gear included Eric Kovacs, general manager of UNLV IMG Sports and Entertainment Properties, which lines up sponsorships and radio deals for UNLV sports, and Mark Wallington, media relations director for Rebels football.
