Summerlin Area Community Events Calendar, Nov. 12-18, 2015

THE WEEK'S BEST BETS

1. Lung Force Walk: The annual event is planned for noon Nov. 14 at Kellogg-Zaher Park, 7901 W. Washington Ave., to raise funds for those who have lung cancer, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other lung diseases. Presented by Kindred Hospital Las Vegas, the event also is set to include jump houses, contests and a Survivor Stride Walk for those affected by lung diseases, as well as a Breathe Deeper and Mission Area where walkers can receive health and wellness information and additional health screenings. Check-in is at 10 a.m., with the walk at noon. A Catch Big Air Contest is set for 1 p.m. Participation in the walk is free, and teams are welcome; however, participants are encouraged to raise funds for the American Lung Association's mission. Walkers who raise $100 or more become Fearless Fighters and receive a T-shirt, a turquoise ribbon and food at the walk. Walkers age 18 or older must register as participants. 2. "You Can't Take it With You": The play is set to be performed at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 and 14 and at 4 p.m. Nov. 15 at Faith Lutheran Middle School and High School, 2015 S. Hualapai Way. Tickets prices range from $12 to $20. Visit faithconservatory.com.

3. Food Is Art: The event is planned from 7 to 10 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Springs Preserve, 333 S. Valley View Blvd., to benefit the ALS Association Nevada Chapter. Tastings from a seven-course meal presented by top local chefs are planned, along with wine and beer pairings presented by local sommeliers and cocktails by master mixologists. A silent auction also is planned. The evening will honor Tony F. Sanchez III of NV Energy and Steve Rigazio, former president of NV Energy and The Rigazio Family, with a concert planned in the Springs Amphitheater featuring Jaime Kyle with Dave Jenkins and Steve Price of Pablo Cruise. Family History Jamboree: Area family history director Todd Larkin is set to be the keynote speaker at the 13th annual Las Vegas Nevada Stake Family History Jamboree, an event slated to feature more than 40 classes on exploring family history from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Nov. 14 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Lorenzi Chapel, 221 Lorenzi St. Classes are planned for everyone from beginners to advanced students. Fall plant sales: The Nevada Division of Forestry State Tree Nursery in Las Vegas plans to host fall plant sales from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 14 at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, 9600 Tule Springs Road. More than 60 species of native and desert-adapted trees and shrubs will be available, including plants appropriate for Mount Charleston and mid-upper elevation environments. Water district open house: In celebration of its 60th year of the facility's operations, the Clark County Water Reclamation District is set to host an open house with tours of its Flamingo Water Resource Center scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 14 at 5857 E. Flamingo Road. Wastewater treatment plant operations began in 1956 at a small facility on Monson Road (now East Flamingo), serving 500 customers at what was described as the remote east end of the valley. The facility is now the largest water reclamation facility in Nevada, with more than 235,000 customers, treating and returning more than 100 million gallons of water to the environment every day. The event is also set to include informational and educational displays.

"God Lives In Glass": The performance to benefit The Smith Center's Education and Outreach Program is scheduled at 3 p.m. Nov. 15 at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, 361 Symphony Park Ave. The concert features an original score written by "Jersey Boys" conductor and Composer's Showcase founder/host Keith Thompson with musical styles ranging from pop to gospel, classical to blues, and reggae to R&B, inspired by Dr. Robert J. Glittering Lights at Las Vegas Motor Speedway: The event featuring a 2.5-mile, drive-through holiday light display is scheduled from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 5:30 to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday and holidays Nov. 13 through Jan. 3. Tickets are $20 per vehicle and $55 for a season pass. Buses are $1 per person with a minimum charge of $20. Goodwill of Southern Nevada offers discounted entry coupons for Glittering Lights with a donation of goods. Santa's Arrival Parade: The event is scheduled at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at Town Square Las Vegas, 6605 Las Vegas Blvd. South. It is set to start at the West Valet near Yard House and end at Santa's House in Town Square Park. Once he reaches Town Square Park, Santa and his little helpers will spread holiday cheer by lighting the 45-foot Christmas tree followed by the center's Snow in the Square show.
