Rock throwers prompt bee attacks

Two men throwing rocks at a bee hive resulted in a south valley street closure Monday evening, Las Vegas police said.

The incident started with two men throwing rocks at a bee hive hanging from an olive tree on Topaz Road near Tropicana Avenue about 5 p.m., Clark County Fire Department officials said.

Not surprisingly, the bees began attacking. Nine people were treated at the scene for bee stings, with three transported to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

Topaz was closed at Tropicana while fire crews in protective gear from two departments helped the people who had been stung.

The crews also sprayed foam from fire hoses to help disperse the bees. According to the Clark County Fire Department, the foam is wet like soap and stops the bees from being able to fly.

Las Vegas police were still deciding whether to charge the rock-throwing men Monday evening, fire officials said.
