1 person displaced after fire in northeast Las Vegas apartment

One person was displaced after a fire Sunday afternoon in the northeast valley, according to a Las Vegas Fire Department release.

Las Vegas and Clark County firefighters responded at 2:52 p.m. to the Corona del Sol apartments, 4600 East Charleston Blvd., for a reported kitchen fire.

Upon arrival, heavy smoke was coming from a second-floor apartment of the two-story apartment building. Firefighters entered the apartment and had the fire under control in less than 10 minutes. the release said. Initially, the fire was thought to have spread to another apartment, but it did not.

The man living in the apartment fell asleep while something was cooking on the stove, according to the release. He woke up gasping for air and escaped, but suffered minor smoke inhalation. He refused to be taken to the hospital to be checked out.

There was a smoke alarm in the unit, but it was not clear if it worked.

The fire caused heat and smoke damage to the whole apartment. Damage was estimated at $25,000.

Fire investigators ruled the fire accidental.
