Volunteer officer who joked about running down bicyclists quits

SANTA PAULA, Calif. — Santa Paula police officials have accepted the resignation of a volunteer reserve officer seen in a YouTube video joking about running over bicyclists.

The Ventura County Star reports Laura Weintraub submitted her resignation letter Sunday.

Police Chief Steve McLean says Weintraub did the right thing in stepping down, saying she would not be able to function as a police officer in the community after the video came to light.

The newspaper says the video shows Weintraub in the passenger seat of a vehicle joking about bicyclists as the car passes them by. She also jokes about running them over.

The video ends with an electronically altered image of a car striking bicyclists.

A caption reads, “Like you’ve never thought about it….”

Weintraub was placed on administrative leave on Friday.
