Pedestrian killed in suspected DUI crash north of downtown Las Vegas
A driver who initially fled the scene of a fatal crash early Tuesday morning has been accused of driving under the influence, according to police.
The North Las Vegas Police Department said the crash occurred at about 1:46 a.m. in the area of Owens Avenue and Main Street.
Arriving officers found a woman on the sidewalk with “apparent critical injuries,” the department said. Medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.
In a news release, police said preliminary findings indicate a 2006 beige Honda Accord was speeding west on Owens Avenue at a high rate of speed.
“Due to stopped traffic, the driver swerved, lost control near the intersection of Owens and Main, and continued westbound in the eastbound lanes,” the release stated.
The vehicle then struck the woman on the sidewalk and a power box and a light pole.
The driver and passenger were seen running from the vehicle but later returned to the scene, according to police, where they were detained by officers.
“Both appeared to be under the influence of alcohol,” the release noted.
The investigation determined that the driver was responsible for the crash.
The department said that a search warrant was obtained for blood samples, and the driver was booked for multiple charges, including DUI resulting in death and reckless driving resulting in death.
The identity of the victim, along with the cause and manner of death, will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s office.
