Your 5 best bets on the arts scene in the week ahead

Las Vegas Philharmonic

It’s time to look back — and look forward — with the Las Vegas Philharmonic this weekend. At 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, music director Donato Cabrera and the orchestra will fill The Smith Center’s Reynolds Hall with “Gershwin: Music of the Jazz Age,” featuring “Rhapsody in Blue” along with works by Stravinsky, Milhaud, Bernstein and Weill. As a bonus, at 6 p.m. Saturday, Cabrera will join Philharmonic president Jeri Crawford and musical guests to unveil the 2016-17 concert season. For tickets ($26-$96), call 702-749-2000 or visit www.lvphil.org.

‘Soul of Klezmer’

Spirited musical traditions forged by Ashkenazi Jews of Central and Eastern Europe meet new sounds conjured by Germany’s award-winning David Orlowsky Trio, which specializes in “chamber world music.” Exploring the crossroads of classical, pop, Middle Eastern music and jazz, the trio will celebrate “The Soul of Klezmer” at 8 p.m. Saturday at UNLV’s Ham Hall; for tickets ($20-$70), call 702-895-2787 or visit www.unlv.edu/pac.

Tizer

Music may be a universal language, but not every group creates the kind of musical melting pot Tizer does. Led by pianist, keyboardist and composer Lao Tizer, the multi-cultural group blends jazz, funk, Afro-Cuban, classical and rock influences. Catch their act at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at The Smith Center’s Cabaret Jazz; for tickets ($39-$59), visit www.thesmithcenter.com.

CSN dance concert

From a search for identity to struggles with addiction to multiple stages of a romantic relationship, the College of Southern Nevada’s annual Student Dance Concert explores emotion through motion. The performance will take place at 8 p.m. Friday in the Nicholas J. Horn Theatre at CSN’s Cheyenne campus, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave., North Las Vegas. For tickets ($10 general, $8 students and seniors), call 702-651-5483.

‘2 Across’

Strangers on a train, yes, but it’s not the Hitchcock thriller. This comedy, which opens Friday, takes place aboard a BART commuter train bound for San Francisco, where a psychologist and an unemployed ad exec bond over the New York Times crossword puzzle. Theatre in the Valley fills in the blanks at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through May 1 at 10 West Pacific Ave., Henderson. For tickets ($10-$15), call 702-558-7275.
