Dense fog resulted in some flight delays at Las Vegas airport Friday
A dense fog advisory was issued for Southern Nevada and parts of Arizona and California by the National Weather Service on Thursday night.
The advisory went into effect at 9:49 p.m., according to the weather service. Officials advised that the advisory would remain in effect until 10 a.m. Friday. The fog may result in visibility less than a quarter mile and could make driving conditions dangerous, the weather service said.
Affected areas include parts of Clark County including the Las Vegas Valley; southern Nye County; the Lake Mead National Recreation Area; Lake Havasu and Lake Mohave; parts of the Mojave Desert; and the San Bernardino County-Upper Colorado River Valley, according to the weather service.
Southern Nevada’s unusual weather resulted in some flight delays at Harry Reid International Airport early Friday.
“The fog earlier this morning caused some minor delays, so there is some recovery underway,” an airport representative said in an email. “It’s important to note that inclement weather anywhere in the nation can impact flights in other cities as well.”
FlightAware, which tracks flight delays and cancellations internationally, reported that by noon Friday there were three cancellations and 82 delays of more than 15 minutes on departing flights from Reid among the 204 cancellations and 3,584 delays reported across the country. That represents 11 percent of Reid’s departures.
Among incoming flights, Reid reported four cancellations and 53 delayed arrivals, around 7 percent of the schedule.
San Francisco International Airport had the highest percentage of delayed flights on Friday.
On Thursday, Nevada State Police and other authorities urged motorists to drive cautiously as fog popped up in areas across Southern Nevada.
State police in post on X Thursday afternoon advised travelers to use “extreme caution” outside the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
Visibility on State Route 159 was less than 300 feet, state police posted at 2:47 p.m., and low visibility was also affecting SR160.
Reports of fog disrupting commutes came in earlier on Thursday. The Regional Transportation of Southern Nevada issued a traffic alert at 8:17 a.m. Thursday advising of low visibility on SR160 near mile marker CL-21.
