Spirit Airlines adding Philadelphia, Baltimore-Washington flights to LV schedule
January 30, 2013 - 1:41 pm
Spirit Airlines will add to its Las Vegas schedule April 25, with one daily nonstop flight each to Philadelphia and Baltimore-Washington.
In doing so, Spirit will follow a local pattern of competing with Southwest head-to-head, but picking its spots on the clock. Eastbound, the Spirit flights to both destinations will be overnight red-eyes, while Southwest's latest flights take off at least five hours earlier and land before 1 a.m.
Spirit is known for low base fares but charging extra for almost everything else, including placing suitcases in overhead bins.
Starting in mid-2011, Spirit expanded its flight schedule from McCarran International Airport, making it the airline's second-busiest station complete with a flight crew base. But the growth rate has tapered off lately; the 131 flights a week on its January schedule was only one more than the same month a year earlier.
