Ex-educator sentenced to 60 days in jail for sex with student

RENO -- A former special education teacher has been sentenced to 60 days in jail and given a two-year suspended prison sentence for having sex with a 17-year-old student.

The Reno-Gazette-Journal reported 35-year-old Bethyl Shepherd blamed her bipolar mental disorder for her sexual misconduct. Shepherd was a special education teacher at Sparks High School.

She was sentenced Thursday by Washoe District Judge David Hardy, who noted that Shepherd told a mental health evaluator that she had oral sex with about seven male students, ages 15 to 17.

Hardy also placed Shepherd on probation for five years.
