Cain: How do you let this go undisclosed?
The political story of the day will no doubt be this Politico bombshell about how GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain was twice accused of sexual harassment in the 1990s.
The six-person bylined story says: "The women complained of sexually suggestive behavior by Cain that made them angry and uncomfortable, the sources said, and they signed agreements with the restaurant group that gave them financial payouts to leave the association. The agreements also included language that bars the women from talking about their departures."
There will no doubt be much fallout from the story. A good initial take on it can be found here from Slate.
For me, my first thought for Cain and his campaign is this: Did they seriously think this kind of background detail wouldn't come out? If these were baseless claims settled out of court, you'd think some smart political cookie in the Cain campaign would have disclosed it early on. You don't let this kind of news drop on you like this.
Forget about the merits or the sleaziness, or the character factors, this story raises significant questions as to whether Cain has the campaign staff to seriously vie for president.
PS: Two more words worthy of discussion: Bill Clinton.
