Fire destroys vacant home in southeast valley

A vacant home in the southeast valley caught fire Sunday afternoon, according to a Clark County Fire Department release.

Firefighters responded to a reported vacant house fire at 1:23 p.m. Sunday, at 5477 Berchmans Avenue, assistant Fire Chief Larry Haydu said.

The first responding unit reported heavy fire from the garage and attacked the fire at 1:39 p.m., Haydu said. The fire was put out at 1:48 p.m.

The house was determined vacant after a primary and secondary search, he said. There was evidence that the home had been inhabited by vagrants.

Damage is estimated at $75,000, Haydu said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation, he said.
