High court’s workers avoid furlough days

The employees of the Nevada Supreme Court will not face mandatory unpaid days off to address the budget crisis hammering the state.

They already gave at the office.

In a meeting late Wednesday, the high court reaffirmed its workers will not have to take furloughs like other state workers.

Budget manager Deanna Bjork said sufficient cuts were made to avoid the one-unpaid-day-a-month policy that lawmakers established to reduce expenditures.

The Supreme Court and its roughly 155 workers have avoided the furloughs for 18 months through cost-cutting measures such as leaving vacancies unfilled, implementing a hiring and salary freeze and curtailing travel.

Bjork said revenue collected through administrative fees continue to drop and suggested the high court continue its quarterly meetings to monitor the issue.
