Veteran judge, lawyer Calvin Magleby dies
Calvin Magleby, a military pilot, FBI agent, lawyer, judge and casino owner, died Saturday from natural causes. He was 88.
He was born in Monroe, Utah, and graduated from Brigham Young University and University of Utah law school.
During World War II, Magleby was assigned to the 384th Bomb Group at the 8th Air Force Base in England and piloted B-17 bombers over Europe. After the war, he flew displaced people back to their home countries.
Magleby passed the Nevada state bar in 1950 and, as an assistant for the city attorney's office, began his 60-year legal career.
"There were only 25 lawyers in Las Vegas," recalled Ginger Magleby, his wife of 43 years. "Now there are 25 lawyers in one building."
While working as an FBI agent, he was recalled to military duty during the Korean War in 1952. He flew more than 50 missions in his military career.
Magleby was a Las Vegas Municipal Court judge and a federal administrative law judge, serving in 10 jurisdictions from Los Angeles to Wyoming.
In 2005, the state bar association honored Magleby for his lengthy career.
He met his wife when she worked as a cocktail waitress at the old Hacienda, which was the southernmost resort on the Strip, located where Mandalay Bay now sits.
Magleby took over as the resort's owner after his client, Judy Bayley, died of cancer in 1971.
"He was a good husband, took care of his family and was very loving and caring for us," Ginger Magleby said. "He was very giving of himself and his time."
Calvin's family moved to Las Vegas in 1942. His mother, Mildred, ran the city's first preschool; and his father, A.W., was the Bureau of Land Management's first director here.
Calvin Magleby is survived by his wife, his sister, his brother, two children and eight grandchildren.
Viewing is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel, 4500 Pennwood Ave.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the same location.
