UNLV puts down Brigham Young 88-74

Tre’Von Willis scored a career-high 33 points and UNLV used a 3-point shooting barrage in the first half to bury No. 12 Brigham Young 88-74 today at the Thomas & Mack Center.

REBEL NATION: Rebels rain down 3-pointers

The Rebels (19-4, 7-2) moved into a tie with the Cougars (22-3, 7-2) for the Mountain West Conference lead.

Willis’ 21 points helped carry UNLV to a 56-34 halftime lead.

Willis and Matt Shaw each made three of UNLV’s nine 3-pointers in the half. Shaw, who scored 11 points in the half and finished with 13, made a 3 to put the Rebels ahead 41-15 with 6:46 remaining.

UNLV shot 20-for-31 (64.5 percent) from the field, including 9-for-13 on 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes.

Jimmer Fredette finished with 21 points to lead BYU, and Bishop Gorman product Jonathan Tavernari added 16.

The Cougars cut their deficit to 61-48 on Tyler Haws’ 3-pointer with 14:37 to play. Kendall Wallace and Willis each responded with a 3 to push the Rebels’ lead to 77-59 with 7:27 remaining.

UNLV’s Oscar Bellfield finished with 12 points, Wallace had nine and Chace Stanback added seven.
