19-year-old pleads not guilty in baby’s death
A Henderson woman pleaded not guilty to murder charges in District Court this morning. Carmela Camero, 19, is accused of smothering her newborn son in August. She was arrested in September.
According to her arrest report, Camero told Henderson homicide detectives that, after giving birth in a bathtub in her home on Aug. 23, she left the baby wrapped in a towel on her bed. She then went to buy clothes, diapers and other baby items.
That evening, the baby started coughing and Camero said she was worried about her mother finding out about the infant, the report says she told detectives.
Fearing she would be kicked out of the house, Camero pressed the baby's face against her breast and held him there until he stopped breathing, according to the report.
In 2006, Camero, then 16, was investigated after she dumped the body of her stillborn daughter in a trash bin at The Mirage. She was not charged in that case.
Camero is being held at the Clark County Detention Center without bail.
