Man arrested in kidnapping attempt

A man wanted in the attempted kidnapping of a 16-year-old girl was arrested by Henderson police on Thursday.

Sonny Haviland, 26, was charged with one count of attempted kidnapping, a felony.

On Tuesday, the girl was walking home in the area of Drake Street and Major Avenue, near Lake Mead Parkway and Warm Springs Road, when a man in a silver car pulled near her and began to follow her, police said.

She noticed the car was stopped in the roadway in front of her and cut through a field to avoid it. She ended up in front of the Boys and Girls Club at 401 Drake St., according to police.

The car approached her again, and the man said he wanted to give her a ride home. She refused, and the man got out of the vehicle, grabbed her by the arm and tried to pull her towards the vehicle, police said.

She was able to pull away from the man and run to her house, where she told her mother, police said.

The mother and daughter got into their car and were able to find the suspect's silver Hyundai coupe and write down its license plate number.
