Three-vehicle crash kills man, hurts another

A three-vehicle crash early Monday left a Las Vegas man dead and a 64-year-old Californian in critical condition.

About 6 a.m., the local resident was driving a 2001 Pontiac Aztek west on Tropicana Avenue and slammed into the back of a 1998 Audi A6 sedan stopped for a red light at Jones Boulevard, Las Vegas police said.

The impact forced the Audi across the intersection and into the eastbound travel lanes where the front of the Audi struck a 1997 Ford Escort Wagon driven by 69-year-old Peter Chestnut of Las Vegas.

Chestnut was not hurt but the man driving the Pontiac was not wearing his seat belt and was killed. The driver of the Audi, Bin Lim of Fullerton, Calif., was taken to University Medical Center with critical injuries, police said.

The Pontiac driver, whose name was withheld by authorities, was the 79th person killed in traffic in Las Vegas or unincorporated Clark County this year, police said.

Drifted off road

Driver killed when car overturns on interstate

A man was killed when the car he was driving flipped on Interstate 15 between Cheyenne Avenue and Craig Road Monday morning.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Honea said the man was northbound in a Saab convertible about 5:15 a.m. when the car drifted off the right side of the road.

The motorist overcorrected sharply to the left, crossed both lanes of northbound traffic and went into the median, where the car overturned before landing in the southbound lanes, Honea said.

The driver, whose name was withheld Monday, was pronounced dead at the scene.
