1 person bitten by pit bulls; dogs scared away by Metro gunshot

Two pit bulls were shot at by Metro officers after they attacked a person in a east valley neighborhood Saturday, police said.

The victim suffered bite wounds and the dogs survived the shooting, Metro Lt. Ken Romane said. The extent of the victim’s injuries was not immediately known, but it appears the victim was treated at the scene.

Dispatchers received a call at 12:27 p.m. about two unleashed pit bulls at the neighborhood in the 2800 block of Beaconfalls Way, near the intersection of Vegas Valley Drive and Nellis Boulevard. At least one person was bit.

The dogs charged at officers when they tried to contain them, Romane said. The officers shot at the dogs with low-level non-lethal rounds but the dogs were not deterred. That’s when an officer fired at least one lethal round that scared them off.

The dogs that survived the shooting were later captured by Clark County Animal Control, Romane said. It wasn’t immediately clear if blood found on one of the dogs was from a gunshot wound or from the victim.

It wasn’t immediately clear if officers had spoken to the dogs’ owners or if there were any pending charges, Romane said.

The shooting came about 24 hours after three pit bulls attacked and injured three men in Pahrump. One victim suffered critical injuries. The dogs who jumped a 6-foot fence were not deterred after being shot, and were scared off by an ambulance, police said.

The owner of those dogs, Ricky Davidson, 40, was arrested and faces charges. Nye County officials said those dogs had attacked another man about eight months ago.
