Volunteers refurbish homes for teens — PHOTOS

Seven homes for youths got a makeover on Thursday as volunteers chipped in to replace fixtures, put in new furniture and put on a new coat of paint.

The project for the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth’s Independent Living Program spruced up the 40-year-old units where teens make a transition before going into more stable housing situations.

Keller Williams Las Vegas Realty provided volunteers for the project. The company previously worked on structural and plumbing repairs, according to a news release. The effort is part of the RED Day service project. Introduced in 2009, RED Day – Renew, Energize and Donate – occurs on the second Thursday of May, and Keller Williams associates spend the day away from work serving in their communities.

During the 2013-2014 school year, the Clark County School District reported more than 9,000 homeless in schools. In addition, the National Runaway Switchboard reports that youth, ages 12-17, are at higher risk for homelessness than adults nationwide.
