The annual event, in its 19th year, will offer a record $3 million in prize money, $800,000 of which will go to the winner of the three-day contest beginning Friday. Contestants join the NHC Tour for a one-time annual membership fee of $50, which entitles them to play in any of a yearlong series of handicapping contests that offer prize money and qualifying berths to the big event, the NHC. At least nine locals will attempt to keep the handicapping crown where it rightfully belongs…

UNLV compliance head Eric Toliver resigns after harassment allegations

Eric Toliver, UNLV’s head of NCAA compliance who was under internal investigation after allegations of harassment were leveled against him, resigned Friday. The university issued a statement announcing the resignation but, citing a state regulation, declined to comment on the specifics. Toliver had been placed on administrative leave while UNLV investigated the allegations. Toliver was in his 26th year at UNLV and 18th as executive associate athletic director of compliance.

New performance venue near Las Vegas Strip to reshape skyline

The Madison Square Garden Co. is partnering with Las Vegas Sands Corp. to build a sphere-shaped arena on the Las Vegas Strip. MSG Sphere Las Vegas will be built just east of The Venetian, and will stand 360 feet tall. The 400,000-square-foot facility will be built on an open-air storage lot at Sands Avenue between Koval Lane and Manhattan Street. The scalable 18,000-seat arena is being built strictly for music and entertainment performances — not sports — although it also could host esports competitions. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2018, and a late 2020 opening is planned. Las Vegas will be the first Sphere location, but plans are in the works for a venue in London.

Lights FC ready for preseason debut

The Lights FC will play its first preseason game Saturday at Cashman Field. The team will host Major League Soccer’s Montreal Impact at 8 p.m. Despite playing up a division, the team isn’t backing down from the challenge. Owner Brett Lashbrook: “We’re playing to win.” The team is expecting close to a sellout crowd as of Friday morning. Defender Zak Drake: “I’m very excited. It’ll be a good test for everything we’ve been training in preseason.”

2 dead at Henderson apartment complex

Henderson police are investigating a possible murder-suicide at Parkway Townhomes.
Police received a call around 5:30 a.m. from the complex at Windmill Parkway and North Pecos Road. When police entered an apartment they found a man and a woman dead with apparent gunshot wounds.
This is Henderson’s first homicide of 2018.
