Palo Verde captures Class 4A state baseball title
 
Palo Verde captures Class 4A state baseball title

Palo Verde defeated Basic 4-2 on Saturday to win the Class 4A state baseball title. It was the first state baseball title in school history. Nate Bartlett drove in a pair of runs for the Panthers. He also had several key defensive plays, including a game-ending double play. Jaret Godman went the distance, allowing five htis, to get the win. Godman had four wins and three saves in Palo Verde’s eight postseason wins.

Basic softball looking to create its own legacy at state

After watching their brothers win state baseball titles two years ago, two Basic softball players want their own ring. Mikayla Berg is the younger sister of former Basic pitcher Trever Berg. Angela Santillanes is the younger sister of former Basic infielder Christian Santillanes. Both helped Basic take home the 2016 state title, and Wolves followed it up with another ring in 2017. Now the softball team has a chance win its first state title after winning the Sunrise Region for the first time. First pitch is against Douglas at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Manogue High School in Reno.

C.J. Dornak leads Basic into state baseball tournament

Basic’s baseball team is looking for a third consecutive state championship this week. Senior pitcher C.J. Dornak lends plenty of experience. He has made four appearances and earned two wins in the last two state tournaments. Dornak is 7-0 with two saves and a 0.72 ERA this season. For his career, Dornak is 20-1 with six saves and a 0.67 ERA. Garrett Giles also is playing in his third state tournament, and should lead the offense.
He’s batting .495 with a team-high 44 RBIs. Bishop Gorman transfer Jesse Fonteboa adds offensive firepower.
He’s hitting .409 with four homers and 35 RBIs.

Coronado rolls past Foothill, 12-2
 
Coronado rolls past Foothill, 12-2

Coronado’s baseball team rolled to a 12-2 home win over Foothill on Tuesday. The Cougars pounded out 16 hits, including seven doubles, in the six-inning win. Cristian Herrera doubled twice and drove in three runs. His two-run double in the first inning got Coronado on the board. Coronado has four regular-season games remaining
including games against Basic, Green Valley and Liberty. Coronado is 17-8 overall, 12-4 in the Sunrise League.
Foothill fell to 14-10, 9-7.

Austin and Carson Wells bring brotherly bond to Bishop Gorman baseball

The Wells brothers: Austin, left, and Carson, right, are two reasons why Bishop Gorman baseball is off to a 17-4 start this season. Austin is a slugging catcher who is batting .500 this season with a team-high 21 walks and 14 doubles. Carson is a speedy center fielder who leads the team in runs (29), hits (28) and stolen bases (10). Together, they hope to deliver Gorman its first baseball state championship since 2015.

Shortstop Edarian Williams does it all for Rancho

Rancho senior shortstop Edarian Williams is one of the best baseball players in the Las Vegas Valley. Through last week, he’s batting .515 with four home runs, six doubles, 12 stolen bases and 19 RBIs. He signed a national letter of intent to play baseball for UNLV in the fall. The Rams are 19-4 and, with Williams, have legitimate state championship aspirations.

Judge won the American League Rookie of the Year award last season after setting an MLB record for most homers in a rookie season (52).
