Knights success far exceeds LVCVA’s tourism goals

Knights success far exceeds LVCVA’s tourism goals

Several months ago, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority set out to market the city as the sports capital of the world. With the addition of the Golden Knights and the Raiders, LVCVA saw the perfect opportunity to do so. The Knights’ success and current Stanley Cup playoff run has resulted in a marketing marriage with Las Vegas that has been far more successful than anyone could have imagined. This season, the Knights have managed to unite the community and made hockey fans around the country take notice. “The Knights, in my mind, really put the exclamation point that we’re the sports capital of the world, not only what they’ve done on the ice in this historic season but how they brought the community together.” Lisa Motley, director of sports marketing and special events for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority Professional sports have been a staple for Las Vegas for decades with championship boxing matches, PGA golf tour events and the National Finals Rodeo. But big-league teams kept their distance from Nevada, due to lingering fears of sports betting somehow influencing games. “Las Vegas stands for something much more extensive and expansive now than what it once did” David Carter, executive director of the University of Southern California’s Marshall Sports Business Institute

Las Vegas casino owner bets $363K on first round of NCAA Tournament

Las Vegas casino owner Derek Stevens inadvertently upped the ante during his second annual NCAA Tournament betting binge. For the second straight year, the owner of the D Las Vegas and Golden Gate wagered $11,000 to win $10,000 on each of the 32 opening lines moments after they were posted Sunday during a live show on VSiN.com. But when the stacks of cash settled into the coffers of the South Point and Golden Nugget sports books, Stevens had actually wagered a total of $363,000 — or $11,000 more than the $352,000 he bet last year. “Last year was kind of tough. I had to make every bet within 10 seconds of being told the line,” he said. “To try to do it by yourself is impossible. This year, we had some of our team come down and they kind of helped me out. And we used two books to get all 32 bets in at a little better number.”

Cool home gadgets from CES

CES just ended in Las Vegas, but not without showcasing some must have gadgets for the home. Sony’s Aibo puppy robot has a camera in its nose, OLED screens for eyes and touch sensors on its body that give it the ability to recognize faces and react to petting. The puppy becomes attached to you the more you play with it and interacts with each person differently. The robot will go on sale in Japan this month for around $1,700. Hate folding laundry? The Foldimate folds clothes, towels and other items and stacks them in a neat pile. Foldimate will begin shipping the machines to the U.S. in late 2019. The machines will cost around $900. South Korea’s Coway has developed an appliance that can remove odors, bacteria and dust from clothing without the need to wash them. The Air Shower can freshen clothing in 45 minutes, and will soon be made available in the U.S. Always losing things? Tile will help you find them. The square-shaped Tile attaches to items like your keychain, bags, purses and even your laptop and can let you know the last location of the item through its app or Google Assistant.
