Everyday angels: Volunteers find ways to contribute to community

For more than 20 years, USA Weekend Magazine and Points of Light have joined together to sponsor Make A Difference Day, the largest national day of community service. Millions of volunteers around the world unite in a common mission to improve the lives of others. Summerlin residents plan to participate by gathering food for The Salvation Army’s pantry, working with children in need and feeding the homeless.

Volunteer opportunities abound in Southwest/Spring Valley

In honor of Make a Difference Day, many individuals nationwide are set to participate in community service Oct. 26. However, many local organizations, such as the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada, the Goodie Two Shoes Foundation and Toys 4 Smiles, are dedicated to making a difference year-round.

Balloon festival and fundraiser to take flight Oct. 25-27 at Southern Hills Hospital

Friends of Metro Search and Rescue, a nonprofit organization that supports rescue volunteers, is set to host the second annual Las Vegas Balloon Fest Oct. 25-27 at Southern Hills Hospital & Medical Center, 9300 W. Sunset Road. The event will feature hot-air balloons, food, carnival rides, and a health fair from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 25, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 26 and 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 27.

Making a difference: Grapevine Fellowship’s food pantry caters to community’s needs

Conrad “Tiny” Jacob Steinhauer, a former rebel biker, turned the focus of his life to helping people after experiencing tragic events. For the last five years, Steinhauer and his army of volunteers at the Grapevine Fellowship, 2323 S. Nellis Blvd., have created a place for anyone seeking a warm meal and a place to rest.
