Reno native David Wise will participate in his second Winter Olympics this month. Wise won a gold medal in the halfpipe skiing event in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Wise said he is feeling 100 percent heading into the Games after two of the hardest years of his life. He is considered one of the favorites in the halfpipe skiing event.

The country with the most Winter Olympics medals is Norway with 329. The oldest competitor was Carl August Kronlund from Sweden, who was 58 years old during the 1924 Winter Games. The youngest competitor was Cecilia Colledge from Great Britain, who was 11 years old when she competed in 1932. Ole Einar Bjørndalen from Norway holds the record for most medals won with 13 total (eight gold, four silver and one bronze). This year’s Winter Olympics will be in Pyeongchang, South Korea and will feature 15 sports across 102 different events. According to the organizing committee, there will be 2,925 athletes competing from 92 countries. The 2018 Winter Olympics will begin on Friday, February 9 at 6 a.m. ET.

Man killed, girlfriend found safe 

Las Vegas police are investigating a homicide and kidnapping Wednesday morning in the west valley. A woman’s ex-boyfriend broke into a home, shot her current boyfriend and then kidnapped her, police said. She was later found safe.
The man who was shot was taken to a hospital where he died. The shooter was taken into custody after a chase that ended near Interstate 15 and Tropicana Avenue.
