To persuade e-commerce giant Amazon to open a new headquarters in the Las Vegas area, state and local governments offered 84 acres of land in downtown Las Vegas. Among the landmarks on the proposed Amazon land: Cashman Field, home of the Las Vegas Lights soccer team; Cashman Center exhibit hall, a library and the former Reed Whipple Cultural Center. The proposal said Amazon would get the 84 acres for free if it met criteria. In January, Amazon released a list of cities the company considers for the second headquarters. The Lights FC plays its fourth preseason game Friday morning. The team is traveling to play against Orange County SC. It’s the Lights first meeting with another team from the United Soccer League. I’m looking forward to it. It should be good to kind of see where we’re at. The game should be a good dress rehearsal for the Lights’ March 17 season-opener. It’s really a big opportunity to prove ourselves. I’m excited. I’m more excited than the games before.

A man was arrested Wednesday after making terroristic threats at a Las Vegas church. Prosecutors say the man idolizes Route 91 Harvest festival gunman, Stephen Paddock, and told church members last month that he was planning “something big.” The man, 23-year-old Calin Hodges, was indicted Wednesday on a terrorism charge. According to the indictment, at least 40 people were at the church service when Hodges proclaimed he would become “the greatest mass shooter in history.” Police say they discovered a diary inside Hodges vehicle, that stated “Stephen Paddock had stolen his idea on 1 October” and that he also admired the Columbine High School shooters. Two judges have ordered that Hodges be held on $15,000 bail and confined to a mental health facility.
A Las Vegas homeowner was fined $72,900 on Wednesday for renting out their house on vacation rental websites without a license. The fines stem from 138 days of unlicensed rental activity through Airbnb and HomeAway. The fines include $69K in daily penalties for unlicensed renting and $3,900 in failed inspection fees. Homeowner Neu Nili collected more than $108K in revenue, and the city missed out on roughly $16K in room tax, city Code Enforcement Supervisor Vicki Ozuna said.
