After watching their brothers win state baseball titles two years ago, two Basic softball players want their own ring. Mikayla Berg is the younger sister of former Basic pitcher Trever Berg. Angela Santillanes is the younger sister of former Basic infielder Christian Santillanes. Both helped Basic take home the 2016 state title, and Wolves followed it up with another ring in 2017. Now the softball team has a chance win its first state title after winning the Sunrise Region for the first time. First pitch is against Douglas at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Manogue High School in Reno.
Basic’s baseball team is looking for a third consecutive state championship this week. Senior pitcher C.J. Dornak lends plenty of experience. He has made four appearances and earned two wins in the last two state tournaments. Dornak is 7-0 with two saves and a 0.72 ERA this season. For his career, Dornak is 20-1 with six saves and a 0.67 ERA. Garrett Giles also is playing in his third state tournament, and should lead the offense.

The upstart Winnipeg Jets are the last Canadian club standing, joining first-year Vegas, Washington and Tampa Bay in hockey’s final four. Economic factors, such as U.S. free-agent dollars, have contributed to the long dry spell. With expansion into warm-weather American cities, only seven of the 31 NHL teams are based in Canada.
