This year, you can get more cash for your grass. The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) has temporarily increased the incentive for homeowners participating in the popular and successful Water Smart Landscapes Rebate Program (WSL).
Qualifying homeowners will receive $5 for each square foot of grass they convert (up to the first 10,000 square feet) to drip-irrigated, desert-adapted plants and trees and $3.50 for each additional square foot. Conversions must be completed by the end of 2024 to receive the increased incentive.
Businesses, municipalities, community associations and multi-family properties remain eligible for the current $3 per square foot incentive, which will decrease to $2 per square foot for nonfunctional, decorative grass beginning in 2025.
The temporary increase comes as climate change-fueled drought continues to affect the Colorado River and Lake Mead, the source of 90 percent of our community’s water supply. A portion of the funds for this temporary increase are from state and federal grants, and the SNWA also provides funding.
Water-smart landscapes use 55 gallons less water per square foot each year than grass. They also require less maintenance than lawns, reduce the risk of incurring water-waste fees, and can help lower monthly water bills.
As an added benefit, WSL program participants are eligible to receive an additional $100 for every new tree planted as part of a grass conversion project. The enhanced incentive is part of a community-wide effort to expand our community’s tree canopy and shade coverage.
