J.K. Nelson Law, a Las Vegas law firm known for handling family, probate and estate planning, along with personal injury cases, has added another office to help serve its Las Vegas clients.
The firm’s new location is at 9340 Sun City Blvd. in Sun City Summerlin. This office is in addition to its offices in southwest Las Vegas (7220 S. Cimarron Road), Henderson (10120 Eastern Ave.), and Pahrump.
Founder Jonathan K. Nelson initially established the firm with a Pahrump location in late 2014. In 2016, attorney Nelson opened a Las Vegas office and thereafter an office in Henderson.
“We’re opening our new Summerlin location as a way to continue to best serve our clients,” Nelson said. “Ever since opening in 2014, we have continued to see growth. I attribute it to the firm’s commitment to exceeding clients’ expectations. Given our growth, we have continued to hire attorneys, paralegals and support staff that share our values and we are excited to bring our client-centered approach to our new Summerlin location.”
LAW FIRM’S GROWTH
When the firm opened in 2014, it was just Nelson and a paralegal, and today it has over 13 employees, including four attorneys. One reason JK Nelson Law has maintained its growth trajectory is the team that Nelson has assembled.
“We are a full-service law firm,” Nelson said. “We have assembled a team that can offer legal expertise in a variety of areas including personal injury estate planning, including wills and trusts, family, divorce, custody, adoption and probate. Every practice area requires legal knowledge to ensure the matter is being handled in a timely manner.”
For instance, when someone has been injured in a car accident – known as personal injury cases – those clients have a lot of issues facing them all at once; injuries, missed work, not having transportation, and just being in pain. There’s a lot of firms out there, but Nelson said what differentiates their firm from others is that they “have a personal touch with that.”
He has a dedicated personal injury team that prides itself on getting to know you and your case.
As for other legal matters such as family law, Nelson said, what people need is for someone to walk them through how the courts are going to apply the law to their situation. Having someone that can empathize with the emotional toll that a divorce or custody matter can have is greatly appreciated by clients.
“I really work with my team to work hard to ensure we are tackling not only the legal issues but are there in a supportive and confident manner for our clients,” Nelson said. “That goes a long way with making sure we’re getting the results the clients are happy with.”
PROBATE ADMINISTRATION
One area that JK Nelson Law continues to see growth in is its probate administration division. Probate administration is the court process of administering the assets left behind by a lost loved one and ensuring they are given to the heirs or beneficiaries.
It’s an area where Nelson believes the firm can provide value to clients.
“Losing a loved one is tough on its own,” Nelson said. “Having to then deal with the courts, can make it significantly more stressful. Our team works to ensure you are able to mourn your loved ones rather than deal with the court system. We work hard to make sure we’re maneuvering through the courts quickly and efficiently for the client and their family.”
ESTATE PLANNING/EXPERTISE
Nelson said one of the biggest issues he’s come across is when a family has lost a loved one who didn’t have estate planning in place with a will or trust. That can put a financial burden on a family, he noted.
“The money is potentially tied up while we go through probate,” Nelson said. “I’ve had clients who said the decedent gave verbal instructions of what they wanted to happen. That’s not how the law works, and it continues to be a pain point. It’s important to take the time and lay out an estate plan because when they pass away without one their family is left having to pay funeral expenses and other unplanned expenses while probate administration takes place in the courts. But there are ways to avoid probate and have your affairs planned out in a manner to avoid a financial hardship for your family. That’s our big push to have people come in for a free consultation and talk about what their assets look like and what they would like to see happen after they die. We can put together a good plan to save their family a lot of heartache.”
TECHNOLOGY AT FIRM
The team at JK Nelson Law also has embraced technological advantages in order to best meet its clients’ needs. Prior to COVID-19, the standard consultation was in office and face-to face. While Nelson and his firm still enjoy and welcome potential clients through their doors, they realize that people may opt for other options.
“We still cater to that clientele who still wants the face-to-face, but we took the time during COVID to expand our technological abilities in order to do video or telephonic consultation and push the electronic signature on documents whenever possible,” Nelson said. “We love when people come into the office, and we sit down with clients and go through their matters. But we know, today, that people’s time is very limited and want to be as much of a convenience to them as possible. We take the approach with certain legal matters, such as estate planning, that there’s no time like the present. And so, we can meet through whatever medium best suits the clients.”
All consultations are free where potential clients get a one-on-one meeting with Nelson or one of his associate attorneys. Even if it doesn’t go beyond the consultation, it’s helpful for people to assess their legal situation and get a good opinion on how to proceed, Nelson said.
