In the past year and a half, Nevadans along with the rest of the nation witnessed a pandemic, not previously seen or experienced in our lifetime. We witnessed an apocalypse type of environment that saw our local economy come to a complete halt. We are very much still in recovery mode with lingering impacts that include a compromised supply chain with several consumer-based products not available or are on back order. We have a high unemployment rate and employers across multiple industries are not able to find needed employees impacting service level and delivery.
In response to the need and training of skilled workers, Helix Electric developed Helix University. This trade-specific university allows the company to invest in the education and continued success of current and future employees by offering educational opportunities and outlined paths for success. Helix University has allowed us to continuously develop a work force that can keep up with the increased development in our state. Having this ability to provide on the job training allows us to focus on creating a culture of where employees are valued and have the ability to trade up, while bringing in a new generation of electricians ready to go to work.
There is no cost to enroll, Helix University seeks to provide training resources and advanced opportunities to increase an employee’s skills and knowledge. Helix Electric prides itself on its high retention rate of skilled employees. This achievement is attributed to the organization’s team-oriented and employee-empowered business approach, which prioritizes employee satisfaction. Specialty classes are open to current employees who are nominated by their superiors, and additional classes are open to any employee. With the extenuating circumstances of last year, virtual classes and webinars have been developed that create learning opportunities for those across the nation, allowing for greater accessibility to courses.
As STEM labs, camps, schools and other educational venues have all proven to be effective styles of learning for children and young adults, Helix Electric is actively collaborating with local STEM-based schools for all ages. Helix seeks to incorporate learning at a consistent basis and to target junior high and high schools with hands-on learning and summer positions to further demonstrate the numerous job opportunities and areas for growth within the trade and construction industries as these students decide on a sustainable career field to pursue.
Despite the uncertainty and hardships that have come with the pandemic, Helix Electric has powered through, only to develop the future generation of electricians poised for a career that will not only stand the test of time but is able to withstand the everchanging career field. By seeking to set an example for the trade and construction industry throughout Nevada, the preservation of skilled workers is of utmost importance, and by providing hands-on learning and growth, we are left with much confidence that the future of our industry will continue to shine brighter than ever before.
