CARSON CITY — Sales of costumes, decorations, pumpkins and candy — lots of candy — will keep Nevada cash registers humming this Halloween season.
The Retail Association of Nevada on Friday projected Nevadans will spend $103 million on Halloween goodies. Nationally, consumers are expected to spend $6.9 billion.
Nevada retailers estimate consumers will spend nearly $38 million to dress up. About half those sales will be for adult costumes, while $14.3 million will be for children's costumes. Another $5.3 million will be spent on pets.
The most popular adult costumes for adults are witches, animals, and Batman characters, according to a RAN survey. For children, princess tops the list, followed by Batman. And when it comes to costumes for pets, expect to see a lot of pumpkins, hot dogs and four-legged Batmans.
Consumer spending on candy is expected to be the second-highest revenue generator for Nevada retailers, behind costumes.
The industry group estimates Nevada stores will sell $32 million worth of candy this year.
