Howard Hughes Corp. starts Harvey relief fund

Updated September 1, 2017 - 1:31 pm

Summerlin developer Howard Hughes Corp. said its Houston-area real estate suffered little damage by Hurricane Harvey and that it’s starting a relief fund.

The Dallas-based company, developer of Las Vegas’ largest master-planned community, said it has more than 4 million square feet of office, retail, hospitality, multifamily and self-storage properties in the Houston area. All of the holdings “are fully operational and open with only minor damage,” it said in a news release Thursday.

The developer also said it partnered with United Way to create a disaster relief fund, with the company donating twice the amount contributed by employees.

“Our thoughts are with our teams and the entire Houston community at this difficult time,” Howard Hughes CEO David Weinreb said in the statement. “We are proud of the spirit demonstrated by our amazing colleagues, whose experience and leadership allowed them to respond quickly and efficiently in the face of Hurricane Harvey.”

Harvey made landfall in Texas last Friday as a Category 4 hurricane. At least 38 people have died, and more than 30,000 people remained in shelters, The New York Times reported.
