Las Vegas and Nevada spared from Best Buy closure list

Big-box electronic retailer Best Buy Co. doesn't plan to close any stores in Nevada.

The company recently announced a $1.7 billion quarterly loss and said it would close 50 stores. Over the weekend, it issued a list of stores to be shuttered that includes nine locations in Arizona and California. Not on the list are five Best Buy stores in Southern Nevada or the company's local mobile store and a number of kiosks in Strip resorts.

The Richfield, Minn., retailer announced the closures in late March, citing the need to be more nimble in the face of competition from online retailers. Many of the stores are expected to close by May 12. Others will close this summer.

The struggling electronics chain said the closures would eliminate 400 corporate jobs and trim $800 million in costs.

Best Buy plans to open 100 smaller, Best Buy Mobile stores. The retailer operates 1,400 stores nationwide.

Shares of Best Buy lost 19 cents, or 0.86 percent, to close Monday at $21.85 on the New York Stock Exchange.
