Massive disposal of personal information open to the public

The Better Business Bureau of Southern Nevada is setting aside several hours Saturday to help people properly dispose of sensitive documents and electronic waste.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the bureau's offices at 6040 S. Jones Blvd., north of the Las Vegas Beltway on the east side of street.

The bureau is inviting people to bring CDs, disks, hard drives, fax machines, computers, laptops, printers, CPUs and copiers.

Memory drives will be punctured and wiped with a magnet. There also will be document shredding and e-waste recycling.

People also can bring cardboard, plastic, aluminum, wood and metal to be recycled. Also, old cell phones will be wiped and refurbished through 911 Cell Phone Bank to be used for emergency services.

Each person will receive a credit card protective sleeve to protect from skimming devices, along with Pinkberry frozen yogurt and popcorn.

First 10 boxes of materials are free, the bureau said in a statement, with a charge of $10 per additional box.

People who cannot make the event are encouraged to drop their items off from Oct. 15-19 in a secure bin at bureau offices between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Documents will be shredded daily.
