Reno company goes to great lengths for number Pi

Nanojems, a Reno-based microfabrication company, announced Friday that is has successfully engraved the first million digits of the infinite number Pi, commonly represented as 3.14, onto crystal and sapphire discs that are 3 inches in diameter. The numbers are so small that two can fit on the end of a hair.

Programmers worked on the pattern overnight, though the actual engraving only took three minutes.

Nanojems has applied to Guinness World Records for “most digits of Pi engraved.”

The record-setting attempt was a part of the company’s Kickstarter campaign to raise $16,800 for its business, that will create custom engraved jewelry on gems and precious metals.

To find the project on Kickstarter, search “pi pendant.” The fundraiser ends Tuesday .
