Schools receive $20,000 from Community Connections

Community Connections donates to four schools
Community Connections, the philanthropic arm of American Casino &Entertainment Properties LLC, recognized the efforts of four Southern Nevada/Northwest Arizona teachers, as well as ACEP employee volunteers, who have worked to improve the educational outcomes for thousands of students in Southern Nevada and Northwest Arizona.
To honor those efforts at the four schools, ACEP’s Community Connections program donated $5,000 to each school. The combined $20,000 in donations will be administered through the Public Education Foundation for the welfare and benefit of students. Honorees include Morgan Hammers, Sunrise Acres Elementary School, Las Vegas; Catie Vondrak, Coyote Canyon Elementary School, Bullhead City, Ariz.; Miguel Chandia-Alarcon, E. W Griffith Elementary School, Las Vegas; and Jessica Hanaki, Beckley Elementary School, Las Vegas.
Since its inception in 2005, Community Connections has donated more than $1 million through financial gifts, in-kind donations and other services.
Life Is Beautiful, Three Square join hunger relief efforts
Life Is Beautiful and Three Square Food Bank united to support hunger relief efforts in Southern Nevada.
At the conclusion of the Life Is Beautiful, a music, food, art and learning festival that took place Oct. 24-26 in downtown Las Vegas, Three Square rescued a total of 1,542 pounds of fresh, sealed, unused food that would have been thrown away.
Items collected included bread, meat products, milk and produce. The total includes food rescued from the kick-off event, Grills &Guitars. The amount of food rescued equals 1,280 meals that will be provided to Three Square’s program partners for immediate distribution to those in need.
In addition to the food rescue from Grills &Guitars, a portion of proceeds from event ticket sales was donated to Three Square.
Tronox donates $5,000 to fund Basic High Robotics Team
Tronox, a Henderson manufacturer, recently donated $5,000 to benefit the Basic High School Robotics Team. This is the third year Tronox will be serving as the team’s primary sponsor.
The Basic High School Robotics Team teaches students the engineering components of robotics and how to build robots through advanced production methods.
The Basic High School Robotics Team is lead by William Fitzpatrick, who started the team in 2002. The program continues to grow in numbers and capabilities each year, and is open to junior and senior students.
SMI Radio to hold fundraiser for Helping Hands
SMI Radio is hosting a fundraiser for Helping Hands of Vegas Valley.
From Nov. 24 through Dec. 20, SMI stations KJUL-FM and KOOL-FM will be educating their audience about the services provided to hundreds of Southern Nevadans by Helping Hands of Vegas Valley, including transportation, respite care and a food pantry.
The stations will feature interviews with Helping Hands Executive Director Dana Serrata, who will share information on programs and future events.
Helping Hands of Vegas Valley is a local nonprofit serving Las Vegas seniors by providing basic needs such as food and transportation.
The organization has kicked off its annual Thanksgiving Adopt-a-Senior Program, gathering food and donations for food baskets delivered to hungry seniors on Thanksgiving Day.
The goal of the campaign is to raise $20,000, in addition to educating the community on the needs of Las Vegas seniors.
